About

This program invites community members to create welcome kits for immigrants and refugees who move to our community. These kits offer ‘day one’ essential supplies for those who often come from crisis zones, without any financial resources, relying on the charitable giving of local churches or community organizations. Kits include essential resources like grocery store gift cards, toiletries, and children’s gifts.

It’s common for people to view outsiders, who come from a different culture, with suspicion and hostility if they feel that their culture is being threatened. This program aims to challenge and interrupt racial prejudice by inviting people to show compassion towards those from different cultures. We aim to engage with our community members through the joy of giving; helping them to respond to change with empathy and compassion. 

In the future, we may expand the program to include Back to School kits, and basic homes and kitchen supplies, zero interest rent downpayment loans, among other offerings.

Instructions

When you finish your kit, a RUN team member will come and collect it. You can email or call Jeremy to schedule a pickup: director@racialunitynow.org, call: (443) 880 6987.

Plan

• Determine how many kits you will complete and whether they’re for adults, children, or babies. Note that welcome kits can cost between $500 – $700 to complete. If you raise additional funds or acquire extra supplies, they can be donated to RUN for future kits.
• Adult, child, and baby kits are all needed: 50% of our recipients are adults, 40% are children and 10% are babies. If you are doing a single kit, do an adult kit. Consider including a child or baby kit if you’re doing two or more.
• All kits must be uni-sex.
• All kits cost between $400 – $500 to complete. Adult kits include phone cards, and kids kits include gifts, baby kits include a car seat and stroller.

Execute

• All items can be acquired online or locally. Local shopping is recommended for gift cards.
• Amazon wishlist is provided for reference. You can purchase directly from the list as well.

Deliver Kit

• Place all items in a large container (tub or sturdy box) for delivery.
• Email director@racialunitynow.org to schedule a pickup/drop-off for the kit.
• For digital gift cards use director@racialunitynow.org as the recipient.
