Liya’s Story
Liya is just six months old—an infant, still learning to crawl. But she was born into a crisis.
Her parents, Ahmad and Tahmina, risked everything to help the United States in Afghanistan. Because of their support for U.S. efforts, the Taliban issued them personal death threats. When the U.S. withdrew in 2024, they were abandoned. They spent a year in hiding before finally escaping to Pakistan.
After all they endured, Ahmad and Tahmina were granted refugee status in the U.S. But when they prepared to bring Liya with them, the U.S. government denied her permission to travel.
Now, Liya is stranded in Pakistan, a country that offers no protection to Afghan refugees. She has no legal rights, no guaranteed safety, and no future there. With Pakistan expelling Afghan refugees en masse, she faces immediate deportation to Afghanistan—where her parents’ face Taliban retribution.
Her parents cannot return to Afghanistan without facing certain death. If Liya is sent back, she will be permanently separated from them and placed in extreme danger.

Liya’s parents received this death threat from the Taliban before the U.S. left Afghanistan. Since then, the Taliban has secretly murdered countless U.S. collaborators in Afghanistan. Liya’s parents went into hiding for a year after the U.S. withdrawal before escaping the country. They cannot return to Afghanistan and we cannot allow Liya to be deported to Afghanistan without her parents.
