Original Statement
Friends,
Racial Unity Now is aware of the recent reports involving an Afghan who had lived in our area. The violence in Washington, D.C. is tragic and we hold the victims and their families in our prayers. We want to address the fear and confusion many are experiencing.
Our community is facing a choice: we can shrink into narratives that divide us, or we can practice the courage that peace requires. Our immigrant neighbors came here fleeing violence, not bringing it. One person’s actions cannot speak for hundreds of thousands of families yearning for safety and belonging. We are asking our community to take a higher moral stand. To love your immigrant neighbors. To resist the urge to turn your neighbors into a caricature. Peace is a daily decision to value people as individuals, to protect the vulnerable, and to refrain from letting tragedy harden our hearts.
RUN remains committed to the wellbeing of every family in Whatcom County, especially those who sought refuge among us. We will continue building relationships across cultures, supporting immigrants, and encouraging a way of life where compassion, patience, and truth guide us in moments when fear and misunderstanding could easily take over.
Let us choose peace in how we speak, how we respond, and how we treat one another in the days ahead.
Best,
Jeremy Dorrough
